Measures to Manage Dengue Fever

Please do take time to look through these <slides>.

What you can do too !

We would like to encourage you to take the opportunity to help your child stay vigilant by practising the following dengue preventive measures:

a) Practise the “5-step Mozzie Wipeout” with your child at home to reduce dengue transmission, so that we can keep everyone safe in the community.

b) If your child is showing symptoms suggestive of dengue, he/she should see the GPs early to be diagnosed. Refer to the MOH website for dengue symptoms https://www.moh.gov.sg/diseases-updates/dengue.

Your family may also wish to use mosquito repellents especially if your home is in a dengue cluster, to minimize mosquito bites and the possibility of dengue transmission.

If you wish to have the latest updates on dengue clusters, please visit https://www.nea.gov.sg/dengue-zika/dengue/dengue-clusters or use the myENV app.

E-Learning Day on 15th March 2019, Friday

Dear Parents/Students,

With reference to the school calendar, 15 March 2019 (Friday) is designated as the Lasallian e-Learning Day.

On this day, students will not be required to report to school, but learning will continue through online lessons and activities.

Subject teachers have prepared online lessons and resources (discussion forum, quiz, videos, etc.) for students to access from home. Students are to complete the planned e-Learning activities before the deadline, given by the respective subject teachers.

e-Learning Day Information & Instructions:
A summary (by Level and by Class) of the e-Learning instructions and resources for students will be sent to Year 1 to Year 4 students
on Thursday, 14 March '19, 3.00pm onwards.  This Google Spreadsheet contains the subjects which have uploaded resources for students
to work on during e-Learning Day. Students will have to access and complete all work stated on this Instructions and Resources Sheet by
the deadline given by their respective subject teachers.  Students are expected to check their SJI Email Accounts for access to the spreadsheet.

2019 Y4 MTL and HMTL Mid-Year Oral Examination

Dear Y4OP students,

Your MTL and HMTL Mid-Year Oral Examination will be conducted over the course of Term 2, Week 1, on 25th March and 26th March 2019.

You are expected to do two things before that:
1. Read the instructions carefully and mindfully. Instructions are found <here>.
2. Check the candidature list meticulously. The list and schedule is found <here>.

And you are also expected to do two things during the examination:
1. Comply with the instructions absolutely.
2. To put in your perfect effort for it. Never ever quit.

Consider this your only dry-run before the actual O Levels. It is the best time to familiarize yourself with O Level procedure, benchmark yourself in terms of standard and to find out what you need to do before the Os. Please, do not squander the opportunity with a frivolous or lackadaisical attitude.

Thank you.

14 May 2018 (Mon) - Term 2 Week 9 to 11 Matters [Mother's Day Greetings]
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Parents,

Dreaded as they might be, tests and examinations are essential for they allow one to gauge his ability. It's not an exercise to show how smart a child is or how much he knows but rather an opportunity for him to find out what he doesn't know and how he can do better. It is not only about the content knowledge but more importantly the skills and dispositions that would be so crucial later on in life - resilience, determination, pursuit of the perfect effort, etc. As adults, we need to remind them, and ourselves, of this - that these young men are more than a 2-digit number and they are more valuable than any grade that they will ever obtain.

It's the end of the examinations and the boys should be commended for their hard work, although for some of them this came a little late. For the next week the boys should take the time to let loose a little but also take the time to reflect on what they would like to do next semester, and more importantly, how to do it. Kindly note that CCA training would likely resume this week. Your assistance is ensuring that he attends CCA would be most appreciated.

Although a day late, we would also like to remember all mothers as being the greatest blessing that one would ever have. To the mothers out there, thank you for being the pillar at home, for being everyone's strength and comfort. Thank you for always being there for the family no matter what challenges the child/ren bring to you daily. We keep all mothers in our prayers as they continue on this vocation that they have been called to. Blessed Mother's Day!

10 Apr 2018 (Tue) - Term 2 Week 4 to 6 Matters [SJI Open House & SJI Carnival "Mahalo"]
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Dear Parents,

“MAHALO” - a Hawaiian word meaning thanks, gratitude, admiration, praise, esteem, regards, or respect. That's what the SJI community did as we celebrated Founder's Day yesterday when we welcomed ex-staff who taught and served at SJI Malcolm Road in the 1980s and 1990s for tea and a tour of the upgraded campus. This was the school's way of saying 'Thank You' to these Josephians who have given so much of their lives to the school.

It was an opportunity for the younger generations to hear the SJI stories of old and build on the SJI legacy started by our Founder, St. John Baptist De La Salle. It was also a time where memories were rekindled and more importantly, friendships renewed. For some of us present, there were moments when we felt 'much younger'. For others, especially the old boys, it was the perfect time for us to meet up with our teachers and express our gratitude - to thank them for teaching us to be the persons we are today and more importantly to have shared with us this very precious vocation of theirs - the call to mold these young hearts who have been entrusted to our care.

With exactly one month to the Mid-Year exams, it is important that we remind and help the young men to settle down and revise for the upcoming examinations. The Year 3s have been heavily involved in their competitions and other commitments and this has been a hectic term for them so far. They are learning to cope with the demands of Upper Secondary life and are slowly, but surely, adjusting. We must be proud of them for their various achievements in their competitions and we should be equally proud that they can honor the commitments they make. But, we must also remind them of the need to settle down when necessary and of the need to build some discipline in their own lives. In this period of time, I am sure that your presence and support at home during this period of time would be appreciated by your son; even if they do not always say it.

    Have a Blessed Weekend ahead!

5 Mar 2018 (Mon) - Term 1 Week 10 & Other Matters [e-Learning Day, PTM, Mass Swim, Lenten Project]
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Dear Parents,

With the term coming to an end, kindly note that the various activities for the coming weeks (i.e. Mass Swim, e-Learning Day etc). In the next few days, your son will be getting back his results for some of the various tests. A number of boys are finding it difficult to balance and cope with the demands of Year 3 academic work and CCA. This is an opportunity for us to help the boys 'take stock' of how responsible they have been this term. We need to help them learn the hard lessons on taking ownership (of their own learning) - being accountable for their own actions and how to get back on their feet and move on if they had fallen short. Most importantly, we need to reassure these young men that at the end of the day, diligence and effort will pay off. They must remember that they are, as individuals, more valuable than just a numerical result and that the focus of any academic programme is to provide them with the opportunity to grow up and become responsible and dependable young men.

    Have a Blessed Weekend ahead!

      • As part of the Season of Lent, the school makes it a point to reach out to the lesser-abled segments of our Singaporean community through the Lenten Project. At Year 3, we are partnering with the Society of St. Vincent De Paul, Church of Risen Christ, to collect food items to contribute to needy families. Your son has been asked to set aside a part of his own daily allowance in order to obtain these household items. Your support can come in the form of reminding him to do his part. Please do not buy the food items on his behalf but instead, remind him of his commitment and to be responsible in proportioning a part of his allowance to contribute to those in need.
SJI e-Learning Day on 9 Mar (Fri) - Instructions to Students
9 Mar 2017 (Friday) is designated as the Lasallian e-Learning Day.

This is also an opportunity for us (the adults) to teach the boys on the importance of cyber-security - not to reveal his user IDs or password to others and the need to change their password/s regularly (every 3 to 6 months or if you suspect that your account has been compromised). It is also good to share with the boys on good practices such as how to take care of their devices and logging-out of web applications after each session, especially if you are accessing from shared computer terminals.

    26 Feb 2018 (Mon) - Term 1 Weeks 9 & 10 Matters [Sports Day, Mass Swim, PTM]
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Dear Parents,

As we come to the close of Term 1, it is timely to check-in with the young gentlemen to see how they have settled into their new level. In school, they have slowly started getting comfortable in their new classes and are slowly discovering their new class and the new dynamics. This can bring about some discomfort and some uncertainty but it is important for them to approach the rest of this year with increased patience, understanding, and determination.

The O Levels is very much about rigor and resilience; not just academically, but also mentally, emotionally and physically. This first common test will be the first taste of Upper Secondary Assessment for all of the Year 3s. As they move on in their year, it will only get harder and more trying. As such, we must always encourage them to pressure forward and to consistently keep trying. That said, it is also important for them to know when to rest and when to work. Thus, as the Term draws to a close, I do hope that the students find time to just be kids, to spend with their family, and to have a well-deserved break before they return.

    Have a Blessed week ahead!

28 Jan 2018 (Sun) - Term 1 Weeks 5 to 7 Matters [TA1, Sports Heats, Conduct Grading, etc]
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Dear Parents,

Thank you for your patience and understanding the past week as we start a new school year. Our apologies for any inconvenience during the morning drop off - the heavier than usual traffic on PIE towards Tuas is a result of the road works just before the Steven Road exit. Things will surely get better. The school is monitoring and regulating the traffic in and out of the school in the morning to ensure the safety of the students.

As we come to the end of the first month of 2018, puberty is setting in for a good number of boys. It is important to remind ourselves that we (the adults) should 'let go' and allow the boys to grow up and be responsible for their own learning, especially for the upcoming Term Assessment (TA 1). It is evident that some of the boys are struggling with their identity and emotions and there's a need for us to give them the space but also gently remind them that we are there if they ever need help. It will do the boys good if they are allowed to 'take ownership of their life' and also make mistakes just like a child falls as he learns how to walk.

Kindly note that the common tests for Term 1 are scheduled in Week 8, the week after Chinese New Year. For some subjects, other components may be included as part of your son's term assessment (TA) results (i.e. class tests, graded assignments, practical test, etc). The latter will be taking place in the coming weeks. Do check with your son on details on the above. It is crucial that we, both at home and in school, work together during this time to help these young men adjust and cope. Please feel free to email your son's class and/or subject tutors if you need any clarifications.

    Have a Blessed Week ahead!
